Satellite hydrology research portal

Inland water levels, seen in finer detail.

Explore river and lake water-level time series derived from Fully-Focused Synthetic Aperture Radar (FF-SAR) processing of Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6 satellite altimetry observations.

From observation to information

A satellite-based view of inland waters

DETECT–DIWASAR uses high-resolution FF-SAR altimetry processing to support the study of inland-water surface elevations. The database portals organize water-level time series by geographic region and water-body type.

01 / OBSERVE

Satellite observations

Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6 radar altimetry provide the source observations for river and lake monitoring.

02 / PROCESS

FF-SAR processing

Fully-Focused SAR processing enhances along-track detail and supports the analysis of inland-water echoes, including off-nadir returns.

03 / EXPLORE

Water-level time series

Access the regional RiverDB and LakeDB portals to examine the available time-series data.

About the project

Designed for inland-water altimetry research

DIWASAR (Database of Inland Waters from Altimetry fully-focused SAR) was developed by the University of Bonn, Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation (UniBonn-IGG). The portal provides a single starting point for discovering river and lake water-level time series derived from FF-SAR satellite altimetry.

The work is part of DETECT, Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1502. For more information, visit the official DETECT project website ↗.
